⛪ 1884 Church Site Historical Marker

  • A New York State Historic Marker at 45 Church Street, Ronkonkoma, NY commemorates the site where the first St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church was built. The building was constructed in just one and a half months and dedicated by Bishop John Loughlin on June 22, 1884

  • The original structure was later replaced by a larger church in 1968

🕰️ Historical Context & Early Accounts

  • Newspaper snippets from 1883–1884 indicate:

    • James Palmer purchased land at Ronkonkoma depot in late December 1883, linked with establishing a hotel or church site

    • On May 10, 1884, Josiah Woodhull of Sayville was reported to have contracted the construction of a Roman Catholic church as a gift from local faithful

    • By mid-June, the church was nearly complete and projected to be ready by June 20

    • On June 28, 1884, the church was officially dedicated with around 300 congregants indoors and many more outdoors. It cost approximately $3,500, and a banquet followed, attended by roughly 40 people

🏗️ Misplacement & Land Resolution

  • Shortly after construction, it was discovered the church had been built on the wrong parcel.

  • The landowner, C. W. Hawkins, agreed to sell the parcel to the church for a nominal amount, resolving the issue without relocating the building

  • Today, the location continues to serve as St. Joseph’s Parish, evidenced by the 1968 replacement structure and ongoing operation of the church
